Lynn, MA (Dec. 24, 2015) – Tasheya Knox remembers sitting in the waiting room at the Lynn Women’s Health Center with her mom.

They were looking on her phone at pictures of different baby swings she hoped to get for her newborn. Knox was in her third trimester waiting to see Louis Laz, MD.

Dr. Laz, who is the main physician at the Lynn Women’s Health Center, overheard the conversation between Knox and her mother. After the routine visit, Knox scheduled her final follow-up for the next week.

“At my next appointment, the nurse calls me in and I open the door and there’s the baby swing my mom and I were looking at,” Knox said. “I never expected that.”

His relationship with his patients, dedication to his practice and the devotion of his career to helping underserved communities are some of the reasons why Senator Elizabeth Warren’s office recognized Dr. Laz recently at the Knights of Columbus in Lynn with a citation for his work at the Lynn Women’s Health Center.

“My patients mean everything to me,” Dr. Laz said. “I consider myself very lucky that they have the confidence in me to deliver their children.”

Dr. Laz delivers hundreds of babies a year at Beverly Hospital, delivering nearly all of his patient’s babies. He has been practicing medicine since 1980 and for the last 25 years, he has been delivering babies at Beverly Hospital.

“Dr. Laz is very committed to the Lynn community,” said Phil Cormier, CEO of Beverly and Addison Gilbert Hospitals. “He is tireless in his advocacy and assistance for his patients.”

The annual Christmas party, which gives out raffle prizes to the new parents, includes gift cards, strollers, toys and other helpful gifts for the new moms. Additionally, DJ CITO emceed the event, while Santa surprised the children with early Christmas presents.

However, for his patients, it was just another chance to see their favorite doctor.

Naiara Gutierrez brought her two-day old daughter, Naia, to the party, just so she can she Dr. Laz one more time and thank him for the care she received.

“I wanted to show him my baby,” Gutierrez said. “I love Dr. Laz.”

But perhaps Knox summed it up best when describing Dr. Laz, saying, “he makes you feel like family.” And with the holiday season in full swing, most people want to spend time with their family.
